Answer

How do I avoid the hosting renewal price increase?

Short answer

Three options, in order of how little effort they take: buy the longest term you genuinely believe in, ask the retention team for a discount before renewal, or migrate to a new host on each promotional cycle.

Affiliate disclosure. We earn a commission when you sign up through some of the links below. It never changes what you pay, and it does not decide the order of this list — we publish renewal prices precisely because they cost us conversions. How we make money.

1. Buy the right term

The promotional rate holds for the whole prepaid term. A 48-month term at $2.99 is four years at $2.99, not a teaser that expires early. If you are genuinely confident the site will exist in four years, that is real money saved.

If you are not confident, you are prepaying for an option you will probably not use. Buy shorter and accept the higher monthly rate.

2. Ask for a retention discount

This is the most under-used move in hosting and it costs one support chat. Contact support a week or two before renewal, say you are comparing alternatives, and ask what they can do.

Retention teams routinely hold customers at a substantial discount off the renewal rate, because keeping you at a reduced price beats losing you outright. Set a calendar reminder for two weeks before your renewal date — the conversation is much easier before the charge than after.

3. Migrate on a cycle

Some people move hosts every promotional term and pay intro pricing permanently. Most hosts will migrate a WordPress site free as an incentive to switch — Hostinger will do it with staff, for unlimited sites.

It works. The cost is a few hours of attention every couple of years, plus the risk that something breaks in transit. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on what your time is worth.

What does not work

Waiting and hoping. Renewal is automatic on every host in this comparison, and the first many people learn of the increase is the charge on their card. Know your renewal date.

Why this happens at all

Shared hosting has high switching costs relative to its price, and providers price against that inertia. We wrote up the mechanics separately.
