Answer
Is Bluehost's free migration actually free?
The free option is a self-service tool, not a person. Bluehost’s own documentation gives it “a success rate of at least 85%”. If it fails, staff-performed migration costs $149.99 per website.
The two paths
Free: an automated WordPress migration tool in the Bluehost portal. No stated site limit. When it does not work, you are routed to a support ticket or the paid service.
Paid: $149.99 per website, taking 2–4 business days, one site per purchase. Email is not included — mailbox migration is a separate $99 per mailbox.
An 85% success rate is honest of Bluehost to publish, but it means roughly one migration in seven lands you at a $149.99 decision.
How the other two handle it
- Hostinger — free, staff-performed, unlimited sites, on every plan. You submit a form and their team does the work. This is the most generous migration offer of the three by some distance.
- SiteGround — free, via its own WordPress Migrator plugin. Automated and self-service, like Bluehost’s free route, but with no paid tier looming behind it.
If you are moving several sites
The arithmetic gets stark. Three sites that fail the automated tool is $449.97 at Bluehost against nothing at Hostinger. If you are consolidating multiple sites onto one host, migration policy may matter more than the monthly price.
