Answer

Can I transfer my domain away from Bluehost?

Short answer

Yes — but not in the first 60 days. A newly registered domain cannot be transferred away from Bluehost for 60 days. That is an industry-wide ICANN rule rather than a Bluehost invention, though it applies to the free domain you were given at signup.

Why the lock exists

ICANN imposes a 60-day transfer lock after a domain is registered, and after certain changes to the registrant’s details. It is an anti-fraud measure, and every registrar is bound by it.

The practical effect is that if you sign up, take the free domain and change your mind in week two, you can leave the hosting but the domain stays put until the clock runs down.

The general process

Once the lock expires, transferring a domain anywhere follows the same steps: unlock it at the current registrar, request the authorisation or EPP code, start the transfer at the new registrar, and approve the confirmation email. It usually completes within about a week.

How to avoid the problem

Register domains at a dedicated registrar rather than taking the host’s free one. It costs $10–15 a year and it keeps your domain independent of your hosting decisions — which means switching host is a DNS change rather than a transfer, and a hosting refund does not come with a domain deduction attached.

The free first-year domain is one of the more effective bits of hosting marketing. It is worth about $12 and it entangles the single asset you most want to keep portable.

One thing we could not confirm

We could not find documentation of any outbound transfer fee at Bluehost beyond the 60-day lock. Absence of documentation is not proof there is no fee — confirm with support before you rely on it.
